MSW Admissions

Applying to the MSW program at Texas State University-San Marcos is a two-part process. Applicants must submit an application for graduate study to the Graduate College at Texas State and a separate MSW application to the School of Social Work. Applicants should submit both the Graduate College application and the MSW application by the School of Social Work the application deadlines indicated below.

MSW Admissions Flowchart

Admission decisions to the MSW program are based on weighted multiple admissions criteria including:

  • The applicant's scholastic aptitude and skills, as indicated by grade point average from prior undergraduate and graduate education.
  • The applicant's paid work and volunteer history in the social services field.
  • The applicant’s motivation and aptitude for the profession of social work.
  • The applicant’s level of self-awareness, including strengths and limitations for social work practice.
  • Recommendations from individuals competent to assess the applicant's capacity to pursue graduate education as well as master level professional social work practice.
  • The applicant's compatibility with professional values and the School mission.
  • Verified successful completion of courses in a) statistics, and b) human biology prior to enrollment. (The School of Social Work offers a correspondence course "Human Biology for Social Workers" administered through the Office of Continuing Education that may be substituted for the human biology requirement.)

As of 2008, the School of Social Work no longer requires the Graduate Record Examination (GRE).  However, if an applicant believes the GRE scores would improve his/her application materials, the applicant may submit the GRE scores.

A personal interview may be required of applicants prior to final acceptance into the program. Students who have received a degree from a Bachelor of Social Work Program accredited by the Council on Social Work Education (CSWE) may be eligible for the Advanced Standing track. All other students must apply for admission under the Regular Track. Initial enrollment for Advanced Standing students (full-time and part-time; Direct Practice and Administrative Leadership concentrations) is in the summer. Advanced Standing students with Direct Practice concentration only may also apply for Fall admission.  Initial enrollment for all Regular Track students (full-time and part-time) is in the fall.
