Distance Education

Distance Education in Social Work

Texas State School of Social Work is committed to offering graduate social work education to students who need education but may not be close to an MSW degree-granting institution.

From 2000-2007, our School offered the MSW degree on the campus of University of Houston-Victoria (UH-V) in Victoria, Texas, 103 miles from San-Marcos. Students received the same curriculum as our San Marcos students, taught by our School’s core faculty, using a combination of face-to-face classes, interactive television, and web-based educational enhancements. Approximately 28 new MSWs have graduated from this effort, doubling the number of MSWs practicing in the Victoria area.

MSW Education Offered On-Line

In 2003, Dr. Ted Watkins, now Emeritus Professor, received a 5-year, 1 million dollar grant from Administration for Children and Families to provide distance education for rural child welfare workers. Approximately 25 students are currently enrolled in this exciting program, which is now directed by Dr. Mary Jo Garcia Biggs.  These students live all over Texas, as well as on military installations abroad.  The School is currently recruiting students who wish to pursue MSW courses in a hybrid educational program, beginning in August 2008.  This state-of-the-art offering will be primarily an on-line program, augmented by web-casting and periodic face-to-face Skills Institutes.
